The Bundesliga side showed excellent resolve and belief to recover from going a goal behind and Slomka was full of praise for his side's attitude.
"It was a passionate European match," he said. "We showed a lot of power and morale and we earned this win.
"Going 1-0 down was a big blow, but then we put pressure on and were creative to get back into the game.
"The will and the morale that we showed helped us turn the game around and everybody showed this effort."
Jan Schlaudraff was Hannover's match-winner with a cheeky chipped penalty.
"I have only taken one penalty in the Bundesliga and that was saved so I just assumed that the goalkeeper would go one way and I decided to chip the ball in," he said on his club's website.
"It could definitely have gone wrong if the goalkeeper had stood still.
"Then everybody would have said I am crazy, but now, everybody says it was amazing."
The goal gives the Reds a slender advantage to take with them to Belgium next week, but Schlaudraff says the last-32 tie is now "ours to throw away".
"We now have to do all we can to get into the next round," he added.
