Parker: Among contenders to succeed Terry as captain

Parker: Among contenders to succeed Terry as captain

After John Terry was last week stripped of the skipper's armband by the Football Association, the national team are looking for a new on-field leader.

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who has led England in the past, are thought to be the leading contenders.

But Friedel thinks Parker is an ideal candidate to be given the responsibility having seen his colleagues attributes since last summer when they both arrived at Tottenham.

"Joe Hart has the mentality to be a captain, but you've also got with England two ready-made captains in Steven Gerrard and Scotty Parker," said the former Blackburn goalkeeper.

"Could Joe do the job? Absolutely. Joe is a magnificent goalkeeper with a great head on his shoulders. But you have got Scott Parker and Steven Gerrard that are tremendous players.

"Playing with Scotty for the last six months or so you can see, whether he has the captain's armband or not, he is going to be a captain.

"He is a top pro around the club, he lives his life right, and on the pitch he covers in front of the back four the best that I have played with.

"When the right or left-back go forward, he is always looking at the gaps that he can cover and the amount of metres he covers in games are immense."

here has only been 3 players who made me hold my breath in dread when they picked the ball up anywhere near our penalty area...in their prime Scholes and Giggs... and always Drogba. Awesome player who on his day was the best striker in the world in my opinion.

remember him scoring a 25-yarder, either the season just gone or the one before, against Bolton at the Reebok. I've never seen a ball hit that hard before in my entire life. You could almost feel the shockwave from his foot contacting it 40 yards away in the stands. Didier Droga. You might not have loved him, but you just had to be in awe of him.
