Eddie Howe: Worried about lack of goals

Eddie Howe: Worried about lack of goals

Burnley boss Eddie Howe fears his side could miss out on the play-offs if they continue to draw blanks as they did in today's goalless draw with Derby.

The Clarets, currently 12th and three points off the top six, looked the most likely winners and thought they had secured the points on 80 minutes, only for County goalkeeper Frank Fielding to make a remarkable save to deny Jay Rodriguez.

It was a fourth clean sheet in a row for the Rams, who sit one place and a point above Burnley, and Howe wants to see a killer instinct from his forwards.

"We felt we created enough chances to have shaded it and taken the three points, but their keeper made a couple of good saves and we missed a couple of good chances," said Howe.

"We started on the front foot, but you could see how difficult it was for both sets of players with the weather conditions - it restricted the attractive game that we wanted to play. We did have to adapt slightly and that was a real shame. We didn't do enough to break them down in the end.

"The back four are really well drilled and organised, and they are getting better and better. All of them played their part and if you keep clean sheets you don't get beaten so it's a good step.

"We created enough. Their goalkeeper's made a great save from J-Rod [Rodriguez] and we missed a couple as well.

"It's not the three points we wanted, but it's a positive step, The league is so tight. But if we want to get into the top six then we have to win games like this."

While Derby have one of the meanest defences in the Championship, making their mark at the other end has been the problem with just 31 goals scored this campaign.

But Rams boss Nigel Clough is adamant his side can do more than just shut teams down.

"We're delighted with the clean sheet but we're also delighted with the manner of the performance," he said.

"Sometimes when you come away from home it can be a negative 0-0. I didn't think that was the case. We tried to take the game to Burnley.

"Frank's not had a lot to do but the one save he did have to make was a brilliant save - it makes the difference between keeping a clean sheet and not.

"You come away from home and you're always happy with the point, but we're happier with the performance.

"The back five have been intact for six games now and we've only conceded one goal - it's no coincidence. When they are together they are difficult to break down.

"We're delighted, especially in the last six to eight weeks. There's a lot of honesty, but here there was a bit more than honesty - there was a lot of good play as well."

here has only been 3 players who made me hold my breath in dread when they picked the ball up anywhere near our penalty area...in their prime Scholes and Giggs... and always Drogba. Awesome player who on his day was the best striker in the world in my opinion.

remember him scoring a 25-yarder, either the season just gone or the one before, against Bolton at the Reebok. I've never seen a ball hit that hard before in my entire life. You could almost feel the shockwave from his foot contacting it 40 yards away in the stands. Didier Droga. You might not have loved him, but you just had to be in awe of him.
