Mertesacker: Needs surgery

Mertesacker suffered ligament damage during Saturday's 2-1 victory at Sunderland and could be sidelined for the rest of the season.

"Unfortunately he has had surgery and we have lost him for a while," Wenger told the club's official website, www.arsenal.com.

"How long I don't know. He had reconstruction of his ligaments, so it will be long term."

The news on Laurent Koscielny's knee problem was more encouraging with the Frenchman expected to be out for only one week.

Koscielny limped off during Wednesday night's 4-0 drubbing by AC Milan at the San Siro and should return after tomorrow's FA Cup tie at Sunderland.

"He had a scan yesterday and the news is quite good," said Wenger.

"He will be out for hopefully around a week. He will miss the Sunderland game, but he should be back for next week."

Gervinho has finished international duty at the African Nations Cup and is included in the squad for the Stadium of Light.

Defender Carl Jenkinson will soon return to training following his back problem.

Wenger also revealed that Kieran Gibbs suffered no setback at the San Siro after being out since October with a groin problem.

"Kieran played his first game in four months in Milan so of course it was a shock to go back to that level. But physically he's all right," said Wenger.

"Carl's back in full training on Monday. That's good news for us."

here has only been 3 players who made me hold my breath in dread when they picked the ball up anywhere near our penalty area...in their prime Scholes and Giggs... and always Drogba. Awesome player who on his day was the best striker in the world in my opinion.

remember him scoring a 25-yarder, either the season just gone or the one before, against Bolton at the Reebok. I've never seen a ball hit that hard before in my entire life. You could almost feel the shockwave from his foot contacting it 40 yards away in the stands. Didier Droga. You might not have loved him, but you just had to be in awe of him.

den Hazard, def. - 1) that girl in a club who makes eyes at you all night, who allows you to buy her a drink and walk her home arm in arm, who then gives you a suggestive kiss on her doorstep before declaring how tired she is and how she has to be up early the next day. 2) A cock tease.
