Queens Park Rangers

Evans: Netted City's opener

Canaries win to ensure survival

Norwich ensured their Championship status after they produced a rousing performance against 10-man QPR to win 3-0 at Carrow Road. Ched Evans gave the home side a seventh-minute lead after Rangers were reduced to 10 men when Damion Stewart was shown a straight red card for a foul on Evans.

A deflected Mark Fotheringham effort doubled the Canaries lead 10 minutes after the break before Darel Russell added a third, but it could have been a lot more as the hosts produced a glut of chances.

Rangers, who were coming off the back of a seven-game unbeaten run, never recovered from the early sending off and failed to create any chances of note during the 90 minutes.

Striker Darren Huckerby was named in the Canaries starting line-up for what could be his last home appearance for the club, while fellow frontman Dion Dublin, who retires at the end of the season, was named among the substitutes.

On-loan Chelsea left-back Ryan Bertrand recovered in time from his hamstring injury and started in place of Mohammed Camara.

QPR manager Luigi De Canio made one change to the side which beat Charlton 1-0 last time out with Michael Mancienne replacing the injured Fitz Hall in defence.

The game was just five minutes old when the visitors were reduced to 10 men, Stewart given his marching orders after he brought down Evans when the striker was clean through on goal.

And things went from bad to worse for De Canio's side as the on-loan Manchester City man struck a thunderbolt volley which flew past the stranded Lee Camp in the Rangers net.

Bertrand almost marked his return to the starting XI with a goal as his curling shot cannoned back of the post, while Huckerby and the impressive Matthew Pattison hit shots wide of the post.

The second half continued in the same vain as the first with the hosts making all the running and bombarding the R's penalty area.

And it took them just 10 minutes after the interval to double their lead through Mark Fotheringham.

The City midfielder hit a shot which Camp seemed to have covered only for it to take a wicked deflection off a defender and fly into the opposite corner.

Gary Doherty had a golden opportunity to add a third, but the defender put his far-post header over from six yards out.

The visitors' reprieve did not last long as Russell took advantage of some comedy defending to chip the ball into the empty net from 35 yards out with seven minutes remaining.

The home side almost got their fairytale ending as veteran striker Dion Dublin, who had come off the bench to a standing ovation, had a long-range piledriver saved by Camp.
