The Irish defender insists they owe their support a performance after Saturday's boring 0-0 draw with St Mirren, which prompted both United boss Peter Houston and the Buddies' Danny Lennon to admit the quality was poor.
United have been good to watch this season, with exciting youngsters like Gary Mackay-Steven, Johnny Russell and Stuart Armstrong - who have all been called up for the Scotland Under-21s - in their side.
And with Killie coming off the back of a win over Rangers at Ibrox, Gunning predicts Tuesday night's match will be much more lively.
He said: "We have been doing well in the past few weeks but obviously it wasn't our best game against St Mirren.
"It was probably two points dropped but that's the kind of game you can lose so it's not too bad getting a point.
"The fans probably didn't enjoy it but there are going to be games like that in the season. But in saying that, if you get a result it doesn't really matter.
"Hopefully we get a win against Kilmarnock and then leapfrog them.
"They are a very good footballing team but hopefully we can cause them some problems and score a few goals against them. We like to play as well so it should be a good, open game.
"I would say the fans will probably get their money's worth from this game.
"We missed a good few chances the last time we played against Kilmarnock down there but hopefully we can take them this time and get a win.
"We are probably a better team away from home and I don't know why that is. There are a few teams like that in the SPL but hopefully we can change that and get a few decent results at home."
Gunning arrived from Blackburn in the summer and has quickly become a regular in the side.
The Irish Under-21 player admits he took time to settle but is now bedded in to life at Tannadice and is showing that on the pitch. He said: "I'm really enjoying it at the minute.
"Playing alongside the likes of Sean Dillon and Garry Kenneth helps. You rarely get a player who comes in and plays well straight away.
"It has taken me a little while to get used to the surroundings. You have got to get used to you team-mates and I think I've now done that so hopefully there's more to come."
