SWP SET FOR CITY MEDICAL - REPORTS

Posted 28/08/08 09:36
EmailPrintSave

Shaun Wright Phillips will undergo a medical at Manchester City today, according to reports.

The Guardian claims that a deal worth around £9million has been agreed, representing a significant loss for Chelsea on the £22million they paid for him three years ago.

The player seemed reluctant to leave a comfortable life on the Chelsea bench, with his agent Wayne Lindsay saying on Wednesday that he would rather stay at Chelsea, with Everton also interested:

"He doesn't want to join either of them and we're now discussing the next move to see what we do.

"Because of all the problems at City and the uncertainty surrounding the place he's unsure.

"He's speaking with Luiz Felipe Scolari at the moment but he's settled in London. He'd like to stay and that's the bottom line but it's up to the manager.

"We're looking at all the options really at this moment in time so I can't really say much more."

City manager Mark Hughes seemed upbeat about the prospects of a deal being done on Wednesday.

He said: "We're obviously keen to bring him to the club if we can. If the opportunity presents itself we'll try to pursue it but we're not further down the road as yet.

"The situation before we flew was the same. It may have moved forward or it may have gone backwards but until I put the call in, I won't know.

"But it's a possibility. We're very hopeful."

As well as Everton, Portsmouth could emerge as a rival for Wright-Phillips are they are still reportedly trying to raise the cash to complete a deal. Harry Redknapp's need for a wide-man increased on Wednesday with the news that Niko Krancjar will be out for three months with an ankle injury.

"Ickle SWP looks like that tiny little fella from differant strokes and the picture of him holding a massive camera dont help"

dainiac14

"SWP for Liverpool, a proper right winger. Stick Dirk Kuyt at centre back, he seems to do more defending than he does attacking!"

trapdoor

"He's rapidly going down in my estimation. I can't understand why a professional footballer doesn't want to play football. Is he lazy, greedy, or both. Vote now!"

kinggerrard

"Rafa take note 9million for SWP dont buy Riera!"

teacherman

"Ian Wright was on his radio show yesterday and he said that he didn't even know who this Lindsay guy was! So that comment from him isn't worth anything. I've heard that if City win today and stay in Europe it's a done deal. "

united

"I rember when SWP was a city player,I was like this could the person who takes over David Beckham. Then he goes to london and the story changes. Now he just wants to win trophys and sit on the bench and at the end of the season start 10 games."WHAT A LIFE" ."

magpier13

"With all the money at chelsea,i won't blame him if he doesn't want to leave. But for his carea i think it would be better if he goes to aclub where he would play regularly. Anyway i don't understand chelsea's policy;you buy exorbitantly then sell at the lowest price available.WOW!"

ModusOps

"whoever SWP's advisor is (I'm looking at Daddy), they have bascially ruined this guy's career....he'd have the right hand side of midfield for england as his own if he had stayed away from the Chavs."

danguy81

"why dosen't swp want to move and play regular football it seems that he's happy to sit on his arse and play 5-10 games a season. you think he'd want to play a whole season and boost his chances of a england place "

gunner4life81

"What's next. Malouda going back to Lyon? We've already seen Sheva and SWP return to their old clubs?"
